Sylvia Mendez

January 28, 2016January 28, 2016 Glenn Robinson school segregation, Sylvia Mendez

Civil rights activist, Sylvia Mendez is our #WCW of the week. When Mendez was 8 years old, she was denied enrollment into an "all-white" school. Her parents, along with the help of their community filed a lawsuit and took the fight for school desegregation to court. Their win set the precedent for the decision in the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education case that made segregation in schools unconstitutional. In 2011, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the U.S., for her work. #OrgulloLatino #EducatedLatina
